Bio
A painter of landscapes, portraits, and figures, Nicole Roskos studied under HongNian Zhang, Lois Wooley, and Nancy Campbell through a scholarship at the Woodstock School of Art in New York, and at Drew University, where she received a doctorate in Ecology, Culture, and Philosophy. She won first prize for her work "Old Growth" at the Earth, Air, Water exhibition, WAAM.
A doctor of philosophy, a published writer, and an environmental activist, her passion for wilderness preservation and her affinity with plants and trees informs her landscape paintings. Roskos articulates a particular engagement with the trees and forests; her distinctive style has strong movement with an impressionist quality. Roskos' work portrays the complex interplay of light and shadow that illuminates the often sublime presence of Nature.
Roskos most recent work is informed by her study of Zen Buddhism and her reckoning with our Climate Crisis. Zen Master Thich That Hahn said, “One Buddha is not Enough.” His teachings have given Roskos a new mission to make paintings that articulate a peaceful call to action, the call to become buddhas of understanding, compassion, and lovingkindness. In that, her paintings communicate interbeing in the miracle of life.
